Peking University Third Hospital was founded in 1958 directly under Ministry of Public Health. It is a modernized and comprehensive (first-rate of Level three) hospital with integration of medical services, teaching, research and prevention and health care, and it has become one of the appointed hospitals for the Olympic Games in 2008. At present, the Hospital has a staff of 2,234 and 1187 clinic beds, and over 8,000 daily and emergency outpatient visits, which has kept its leading position among hospitals in Beijing for 10 years. The Hospital has 31 clinical departments, 12 medical technique departments, 23 doctoral programs, 26 master’s programs, 1 postdoctoral program, 44 doctoral supervisors, 1? member of Chinese Academy of Science and 1 Chang Jiang Scholar.

In recent years, the hospital has witnessed a steady growth of its medical treatment. The number of outpatients received and operations taken are taking a steady increase. Meanwhile, the medical services level keeps growing constantly. In 2007, the number of annual clinic patients broke through 2 million, which up to 2,110,000. The number of annual discharge patients was 40,000, which created a new high record in the history. The average hospitalization days were 9.73 days which was controlled within 10 days, which was a new low record in history. Among all hospitalized patients, who from other provinces rather than Beijing local slightly increased in proportion. The ratio of drug income of the Hospital’s revenue kept at a relatively low level among the hospitals in Beijing.

As a teaching hospital of Peking University, apart from plenty of medical treatment responsibilities, the Third Hospital undertakes a lot of teaching tasks and has achieved remarkable success. The hospital undertakes tasks of Clinical Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing, Testing and Public Health; it also undertakes the tasks of post-graduate training, refresher physician education, continuing education, among others. At present, 14 departments and 10 departments are respectively confirmed by Beijing Health Bureau as general medical specialist training base and sub-specialist training base, and responsible for the training mission of specialists in Beijing. In 2005, we further discussed the teaching model of 7- or 8-year programs in Clinical Medicine according to its practice, and fully carried out the advantages of a “four-in-one” teaching-managing model. In the same year, The Reform and Practice of Degrees in the specialty of Clinical Medicine received the second-class state-level results Teaching Award. In 2006, Professor Qu Mianyu received the first Cai YuanPei Award of Peking University. In 2007, our hospital with overall “A” score passed the evaluation for undergraduate education issued by Ministry of Education.
In recent years, based on staff’s efforts, the hospital has achieved great progress in the field of scientific research. In 2005, our hospital ranked 11 based on 41 pieces of science paper among national health care SCI paper ranking. Our hospital ranked 17, which has continuously stayed top 20 for 3 year among Medline accepted paper calculated by Ministry of Science. In 2006, the Obstetrics and Gynecology, Sports Medicine, Digestive Disease Departments were considered as the leading projects in the National Science & Technology Pillar Program in the Eleventh Five-year Plan Period respectively. Recently, the hospital has 6 medical experts holding posts in 9 different international organizations; 42 people holding posts in national academic standing committee, which are level II & III or above, involving 20 subjects, of that, specialists holding posts as Chairmen of the committee and Vice Chairmen of the committee are 19 person-times, involving 12 subjects, and young committee members are 19 person-times, involving 12 subjects. In 2007, the Orthopedics Dept. rewarded the “Innovation Team” issued by Ministry of Education.
Peking University Third Hospital has many sophisticated modernized medical equipments—1.5 T and 3.0 T MRI, 16 slice, 64 slice CT, 2 SPECT, angiography equipments and color Doppler ultrasound. The usage of medical image digital transmitting; outpatient station which is an integrated workshop of medical test, medical image and drug inspection for medical professionals; electronic prescription, which play important roles in improving medical safety and service quality.
