Delegation from the University of Michigan Medical School Visits Peking University Third Hospital to Deepen Practical China-U.S. Cooperation in Medical Education

On July 22, 2026, Professor Lou Edje, Associate Dean for Medical Education at the University of Michigan Medical School, led a delegation on a visit to Peking University Third Hospital.

At the symposium, President Fu Wei of Peking University Third Hospital and Professor Lou Edje reviewed the results of 16 years of cooperation between the two sides, with more than 80 projects implemented and over 160 high-level papers published, and with flagship programs such as young scholar exchanges and executive training producing notable results.

The Hospital's Party and Administration Office and Education Department respectively introduced the overall development of Peking University Third Hospital, its disciplinary strengths, and the achievements in building its medical education system, as well as the executive education and training program. Three former trainees shared what they had gained from the program and their experience in applying it. Experts from both sides held in-depth exchanges focused on topics including the application of AI in medical education, the implementation of a competency-oriented teaching system, and joint specialty development. Ding Shigang, Director of the Department of Gastroenterology, reviewed the long-standing foundation of cooperation between the two institutions in fields such as pancreatic cancer and gastric cancer. Professor Lou Edje delivered a special lecture on frontier topics including global trends in medical education and innovative applications of AI technology.

In her closing remarks, Vice President Shen Ning expressed the hope that the two sides would carry out fruitful exploration in deepening medical education, targeted joint specialty development, and joint talent training.

After the meeting, the delegation conducted specialty-to-specialty exchanges and visited the gastroenterology ward and the endoscopy center in person to refine the cooperation plan.
