Recently, Professor Li Dong and Assistant Research Fellow Ye Yang from the Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Peking University Third Hospital, in collaboration with Research Fellow Zhao Yue from the Department of Reproductive Medicine, published a research paper in the international journal Journal of Hazardous Materials titled: "Polystyrene/polylactic acid microplastics impair transzonal projections and oocyte maturation via gut microbiota-mediated lipoprotein lipase inhibition."
Targeting the increasingly serious problem of microplastic pollution, the study proposes that the gut microbiota may serve as a key target for the prevention and treatment of microplastic-induced reproductive damage. Gut microbiota intervention strategies such as microbiota transplantation and prebiotics are expected to become new therapeutic means for clinically alleviating microplastic-related reproductive disorders, and provide scientific basis for the formulation of environmental policies.
Li Dong, Ye Yang, and Zhao Yue are the co-corresponding authors of the paper. Ph.D. Candidates Zhang Jiacheng and Hu Hangqi, and Associate Research Fellow Zhu Yutian from the Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Peking University Third Hospital, are the co-first authors.
