On April 2, the gastroenterology team led by Duan Liping from Peking University Third Hospital published research findings titled "Maternal Preconception Antibiotic Exposure Disrupts Microbial Succession: A Transgenerational Risk for Offspring Gut Mucosal Immaturity and Colitis Susceptibility" in Advanced Science (IF: 14.1).
Addressing the unclear impact of preconception microbiota disturbance on offspring health, the study combined animal experiments, metagenomic and metabolomic analyses, and clinical cohorts, and used multi-omics and fecal microbiota transplantation techniques to reveal the transgenerational effects of maternal preconception antibiotic exposure on offspring gut microbiota and susceptibility to colitis. The findings suggest that antibiotics should also be used cautiously during the often-overlooked preconception period.
