The Executive Editor of NEJM AI Visited Peking University Third Hospital to Discuss the Future of Medical AI and Journal Mission

On October 28, 2025, the second session of the "Qingnang Forum," organized by Peking University Third Hospital and meticulously planned by the Peking University Third Hospital - Ant Group Medical Large Model Joint Laboratory, was held at Peking University Third Hospital. The forum specially invited Charlotte Haug, Executive Editor of NEJM AI, an affiliated journal of The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), to serve as the keynote speaker, sharing on the topic of "The Role of Scientific Journals in Medical Artificial Intelligence." Several experts from inside and outside the hospital attended. The forum was hosted by Ma Qingbian, Vice President of Peking University Third Hospital.
During her presentation, Professor Haug analyzed the opportunities and challenges of Artificial Intelligence application in the medical field; she proposed the concept of a "two-way effect" regarding the role positioning of scientific journals in the AI era; and she pointed out that the widespread application of AI will further highlight the unique value of human beings. Zhao Jianfei, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of NEJM Clinical Practice and Responsible Editor of NEJM AI, discussed issues such as how to conduct high-quality clinical AI research in China. Attendees exchanged views on topics including experimental design and ethical considerations.
